Carmelitos Community Garden, Long Beach, CA A community garden for public housing residents in a decommissioned military housing project.  Vacant land was converted into community plots, hot houses, outdoor classrooms, a rose garden for senior citizens, and 4H program teaching plots.  It also created a public plaza for selling crops grown by the residents.  The center provides training for residents, teaches gardening and horticultural skills, and placement for its graduates in the green industry. The garden has expanded over the succeeding years to include the full 10 acres originally planned and a nursery for growing plants for the Los Angeles Housing Authority.
